When Marie Spaemann (cello and vocals) and Christian Bakanic (accordion, piano and vocals) make music together, the meeting of their different influences becomes an immediately moving encounter with the audience: soul and jazz, classical music, tango nuevo and world music meet and merge into refreshing original compositions, songs and exciting new interpretations, performed with the ease of true virtuosos.
From atmospheric tone colours to groovy basslines and percussive elements, Spaemann and Bakanic constantly explore the possibilities of their instruments anew. Bakanic’s breathtaking improvisations and Marie Spaemann’s vocals develop a density and urgency that touches the listener.
Marie Spaemann
Unconventional and unbound by boundaries, the Vienna-born cellist and singer Marie Spaemann moves fluidly between classical, soul and jazz, ranging from Gaspar Cassadó’s
*Prélude* to Hebrew folk songs, from Arabic love poetry to her own compositions. Between 2018 and 2021, Marie toured Europe regularly as a soloist as part of the production The World of Hans Zimmer.
In recent years, Marie Spaemann has performed both with her solo programme and in a duo with Christian Bakanic (accordion) at venues including the Amsterdam Cello Biennale, the Saalfelden Jazz Festival, the Düsseldorf Festival, as well as at the Konzerthaus, the Musik-verein and Porgy and Bess in her home city of Vienna.
Christian Bakanic
Christian Bakanic, an Austrian accordionist and composer, studied folk music at the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory in Graz and classical accordion at the University of Music, and has already made a name for himself as a jazz musician in Austria. His musical influences and experiences blend subtly in his compositions, combining the complex spontaneity of jazz, the spirited passion of tango nuevo, and the disciplined precision of classical music with the rich traditions of European folk music.
